CLINTON, SC--USC Aiken finished day one in 10th place at the Presbyterian College Invitational following an opening round team total of 10-over-par 298. UNC Pembroke leads the 21-team field, 10 shots ahead of the eighth-ranked Pacers.

The 36-hole event is being contested at the 6,680 yard, par 72 Musgrove Mill Golf Course in Clinton, SC. In 2002, the Pacers finished tied for second with Kennesaw State at 20-over-par, 13 strokes behind tournament winner Pfeiffer University.

Freshman Clint Smith leads the Pacers with a one-under-par 71. Following a 37 on the front, the High Point, NC native carded a two-under-par 34 on the back side to sit in a tie for ninth at the midway point.

Senior Bryan Sangid is tied for 23rd after firing a two-over-par 74. A trio of sophomores rounds out the contingent for head coach Michael Carlisle and USC Aiken. Reggie Bergholtz is tied for 46th following a four-over-par 76. Dane Burkhart is one stroke back and tied for 61st while Sam Mason is two back of Bergholtz and in a tie for 69th.

UNC Pembroke is the surprising leader after day one. The Braves carded an even total of 288 to lead Georgia College and State University by one stroke and Pfeiffer by four shots.

Mark Long of UNC Pembroke is the individual leader at four-under-par. Stephen Conrad of Nova Southeastern, John Cronvall of GC&SU, and Greg Dobbins of UNC Pembroke, however, lurk just one shot behind Long at three-under-par.

Tuesday’s final round is scheduled to begin at 8:30 AM weather permitting.
